A new study shows that wearing a cloth mask while exercising is detrimental to your workout and your health. The research team at Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation, in Frisco, Texas, found that study participants who wore a cloth mask while working out had a 14% drop in exercise time, a 29% drop in peak oxygen consumption and a reduced maximal heart rate. Most other studies involving the effects of mask-wearing while exercising assessed surgical face masks, not cloth masks. "Our results have several implications for training and performance while wearing a cloth face mask," the researchers said in a news release. They advised that people should try to modify the intensity, time and type of activity when they are wearing a mask and exercising. When wearing the cloth mask, participants also said they felt increasingly short of breath and claustrophobic at higher exercise intensities. Thirty of the 31 agreed or strongly agreed that putting forth maximum effort was harder with a mask on, according to the report published online April 13 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. drugs.com

HIIT (high-intensity interval training) can have a profound effect on aging at the cellular level. The older you get, the less efficient your energy- producing mitochondria become. But when researchers analyzed three groups of exercisers over 12 weeks (one that did HIIT, one that did resistance training, and one that did a combination of the two) they found that those who did HIIT actually reversed that age-related degeneration. womenshealthmag.com

Melanie Booth, a university professor in Oregon, had a son, Mac. At 3 months old, he was having problems with nursing, discomfort when lying on his tummy and a tendency to turn his head only one way. His pediatrician recommended she take him to a chiropractor. Booth found that her lactation consultant and several friends also endorsed chiropractic care for kids. As the chiropractor worked on Mac, "he began to quiver and shake, and it kind of scared my husband and me," Booth says. "But she explained that she was releasing energy that was stored up incorrectly in his body and particularly his spine. Almost immediately, we saw a change in his ability to move his neck." The nursing and tummy time problems cleared up, too, as Mac continued chiropractic adjustments over several months. Who do you know that could benefit from chiropractic care? usatoday.com

Marshmallow root has been used for centuries to treat infections, improve digestion and much more. If you feel symptoms of tonsillitis, bronchitis, a urinary tract infection or respiratory infection coming on, taking marshmallow root at the first sign of discomfort may help ease symptoms. It can help speed up the healing process and naturally kill bacteria that can cause various ailments. Once ingested, it helps increase the secretion of urine, which improves the body's ability to draw bacteria out of the urinary tract. This is the reason it's also recommended for treating kidney stone symptoms. draxe.com
