The Earth's climate has undergone some big changes, from global volcanism to planet-cooling ice ages and dramatic shifts in solar radiation. And yet life, for the last 3.7 billion years, has kept on beating. Now, a study by MIT researchers in Science Advances confirms that the planet harbors a "stabilizing feedback" mechanism that acts over hundreds of thousands of years to pull the climate back from the brink, keeping global temperatures within a steady, habitable range. As the Earth's temperatures fluctuate over longer stretches, these fluctuations may just happen to be small enough in the geologic sense, to be within a range that a stabilizing feedback, such as silicate weathering (a geological process by which the slow and steady weathering of silicate rocks that draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and into ocean sediments, trapping the gas in rocks), could periodically keep the climate in check, and more to the point, within a habitable zone.

Holiday Diet Tip: Focus on the Company… It’s easy to get swept up in all of the food at a holiday event. Instead of making food the center of your day, focus on visiting with friends and family. Take time to make conversation between bites. You’ll eat less and enjoy your visit more. When the holiday season draws to a close for another year, you’re more likely to remember the time spent with loved ones than the meals themselves.

Numerous case studies and some clinical studies are revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the various health challenges related to sleep that people experience. In this case the patient reported in the study was a 28-year-old female with complaints of sleep disturbance, anxiety, low back pain and headaches. The chiropractor examined her and found structural shifts in her neck, mid back, and low back. She had decreased range of motion and muscle imbalance in her neck, mid back, and lower back as well as a gait disturbance. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. The nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. Following chiropractic care she experienced a resolution in her sleep disturbance and anxiety. Her headaches and low back pain also resolved and her gait pattern improved. Who do you know that could benefit from chiropractic care?

If you’re feeling lethargic, just the smell of peppermint can mentally perk you up. A study from Wheeling Jesuit Univ. has linked peppermint to greater alertness, performance, and motivation by serving as a central nervous system stimulant. Having a bottle of peppermint oil on hand and sniffing it whenever you’re feeling sluggish may help. According to the Univ. of MD Medical Center, peppermint improves the flow of bile by calming down the muscles of the stomach. Once this happens, food can pass more freely and quickly through the stomach. This can also cut down on gas, bloating, and diarrhea.
