Sweets change our brain: Chocolate bars, crisps and fries - why can't we just ignore them in the supermarket? Researchers at the Max Planck Inst. for Metabolism Research, in collaboration with Yale Univ., have now shown that foods with a high fat and sugar content change our brain. If we regularly eat even small amounts of them, the brain learns to consume precisely these foods in the future. The study measured the brain activity of a group given a dessert high in fat and sugar (pudding) each day for two months. They found that the brain reactions of those given the pudding significantly increased after eight weeks, particularly activating the region responsible for motivation and reward and releasing dopamine. They concluded that the brain learns to subconsciously prefer and crave these fatty and sugary foods, even when people stop eating them. sf.mpg.de
