Tidbit #1: Live In The Moment

It’s appropriate to plan for the future, and to learn from the past, but it’s not a good idea to constantly have your mind on how “things will be better next year when…” or on “life was so much better last year because…” Being able to live in the moment means appreciating what’s around you. It’s about having your attention on now, instead of reminiscing about what’s already gone, or worrying about what’s yet to come. By keeping your attention on the present moment, you can get much more enjoyment from the life you already have.

Thailand is a top plastic polluter in the world, but a Buddhist temple in Bangkok is changing that by recycling thousands of plastic bottles and turning them into orange robes for the monks. In two years, these monks have crushed 40 tons (88,000 lb) of plastic, aiming to curb plastic waste entering the Chao Phraya River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. Unlike most temples where people give monks alms like food and clothes, these monks ride bicycles asking for plastic bags and bottles in exchange for blessings from the temple’s abbot. The temple has produced at least 800 sets of robes. Each set sells for between 2,000 baht ($65.79) and 5,000 baht ($164.47), which is used to keep funding the project and pay waste-sorting volunteers, many of whom are local housewives, retirees, and disabled persons. Thailand is the fifth largest contributor of plastic to the world’s oceans so the monks are not only diverting a good amount of plastic from reaching the environment but are also raising awareness about this urgent issue.

Tidbit #3: Diet Tip

One way to help lose weight quickly is to cut back on sugars and starches, or carbohydrates. This could be with a low carb eating plan or by reducing refined carbs and replacing them with whole grains. When you do that, your hunger levels go down, and you generally end up eating fewer calories.

One powerful strategy to enhance the ability for our bodies to self-heal is chiropractic care. The complex network of activity that controls all functions within the body, including healing, is the central nervous system which consists of the brain and spinal cord. When the spinal bones are improperly aligned this causes nerve stress that adversely impacts the body’s healing potential. Poor posture degrades the health of the spine and consequently leads to the degrading health of brain and organ function. Forward head posture and loss of neck curve are postural abnormalities often created by poor posture and trauma. The resulting pattern of forward head posture adds up to 30 pounds of abnormal weight leverage and pulls the spinal column out of alignment. Misalignment of the spine is called subluxation. Receiving frequent chiropractic adjustments helps to alleviate the built up pressure on the nervous system. As a result, the body is able to heal as it was intended.

Jerusalem artichokes (also called sunchokes) are high in the essential minerals, potassium and magnesium. Potassium enables your heart to beat properly and keeps your blood pressure in the healthy range. Most of the carbs in Jerusalem artichokes are in the form of inulin which acts as a prebiotic, providing a source of food for beneficial probiotic organisms in your body. These improve your immune function, produce vitamins, lower your cholesterol and prevent disease-causing bacteria from multiplying.
