Tidbit #1: To Become Less Stressed

Don’t work on weekends. Work on taking one media and internet-free day. Take a break from checking email on Saturdays or Sundays. Instead, spend time with friends, family, a good book or go to a movie or some other fun activity. Your body and mind will thank you for it!

A new study has found a direct association between ultra-processed foods and over 30 health complications, including depression, sleep disturbances and death related to cardiovascular disease. Ultra-processed foods (low-cost, easy-to-prepare items like cereal bars, frozen meals and pre-packaged snacks) comprise 60% of Americans’ diets and have been previously linked to poor health outcomes like cancer or cognitive decline. The most “convincing” studies researchers found on the effects of high ultra-processed food consumption culminated in a 50% increased risk of death related to cardiovascular disease, a 48-53% increased risk of mental disorders or anxiety and a 12% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Other studies highly suggested that ultra-processed food were linked to an overall 40-60% heightened risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, sleep issues, and mortality related to heart disease.

Tidbit #3: Diet Tip

Stock your kitchen with healthy, convenient foods. Having ready-to-eat snacks and meals-in-minutes on hand sets you up for success. You'll be less likely to hit the drive-through or order a pizza if you can throw together a healthy meal in five or 10 minutes. Here are some essentials to keep on hand: frozen vegetables, whole-grain pasta, reduced-fat cheese, canned tomatoes, canned beans, pre-cooked grilled chicken breast, whole grain tortillas or pitas, and bags of salad greens.

Another way to keep your lungs breathing easier is with regular chiropractic visits. The Journal of Physical Therapy Science published a study involving 30 subjects between the ages of 20 and 38 who were currently healthy with no respiratory issues or pain in their mid-back region. Half were randomly assigned to an experimental group, which is the group that received actual spinal adjustments. The rest were assigned to the control, receiving sham treatments instead. At the onset of the study, each subject's respiratory function was tested and recorded. About ten minutes later, depending on which group they were in, they either received either a chiropractic adjustment in the thoracic area of the spine or sham treatment. Follow-up respiratory testing occurred immediately following the actual or sham treatment session. Researchers noted that the group that received actual chiropractic had "significantly increased" their forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. The group that received the sham treatments experienced no difference in their respiratory function.
